March 1, 2011 – The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded a contract to Skyhaven Systems, LLC to develop a small unit drinking water system that can inactivate contaminants including pesticides, organic pollutants, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and pathogens. In the US, 85% of all public water systems are small, meaning they serve fewer than 3,300 people. For providing these small unit drinking water systems, two findings highlight the challenges. First, the small communities typically have a low tax basis making affordability a challenge unless the system is low in cost. Secondly, the small communities typically do not have technical experts to manage the water disinfection system thus posing a challenge that the system must be simple to operate. To this end, Skyhaven Systems, LLC will be developing an advanced contamination inactivation system that simultaneously produces a mixed oxidant from air and water reactants and delivers the mixed oxidant to a process flow stream.
