Skyhaven Systems, LLC Awarded NASA Contract To Develop A Skyhaven Capture System For Carbon Dioxide
November 29, 2011 – NASA has awarded Skyhaven Systems, LLC a contract to capture carbon dioxide via a new reaction mechanism. The firm will be demonstrating a novel concept for CO2 capture supporting In Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) to enable missions to the Moon and Mars. The Martian atmosphere consists of 95% carbon dioxide which can be used in ISRU processes to synthesize propellant and life support consumables. In this program, the firm will demonstrate the gas phase reactive capture of carbon dioxide at atmospheric pressure using low concentrations of carbon dioxide. A prototype will be designed and developed to meet the requirements of NASA’s MARCO POLO project which has the goal of capturing and delivering 88 g pure CO2/hr. This preliminary design of a prototype reactor has a competitive volume of 1 liter, a power requirement of 25 W, and a mass of 3 kg.
