Department of Energy Awards Contract to Skyhaven Systems’ Principals for the Fabrication of Low Z Electroformed Energy Degraders
February 21, 2017 – The Department of Energy awarded a contract to principals at Skyhaven Systems, LLC to develop Low Z energy degraders using a new fabrication process. Energy degraders are used in particle accelerators to alter the beam energy in experimental beam lines without having to change the set points of the accelerator. These energy degraders ae placed in-line with the accelerator beams to provide a fast, reliable, and reproducible method for setting the beam energy. In addition, these energy degraders can be used to separate isotopes. Consequently, these energy degraders provide a convenient tool used in nuclear physics applications for understanding atomic behavior to the production of rare isotopes for use in medical applications and other fields. Paramount to the success of these energy degraders are precisely fabricated wedge shape structures with aluminum that have a controlled thickness gradient of 0.5 mm to 2.0 mm over a 50 cm wide by 20 cm tall area, and with precise angles on the order of 5 mrad. This requires a new manufacturing approach that can produce these shapes with tight mechanical tolerances and minimal surface fluctuations. Toward this need, Skyhaven Principals are presently developing a method to produce these energy degraders utilizing an electroforming process that precisely deposits aluminum in the desired shape with the requisite mechanical properties.
