BOSTON, March 14, 2008 — Skyhaven Systems, LLC (RIL) has been awarded a contract from the US Navy to develop and demonstrate a modular wastewater treatment system to supplement Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) wastewater capacity for increased mission system demands. The LCS architecture is based on a modular design for various systems which will allow greater flexibility and extension in mission capability for this advanced ship. Wastewater treatment utilizing large storage tanks currently in use on cruise vessels and on some Navy ships will not meet the requirements for a supplemental compact system. In addition, regulations governing effluent discharge into open waters are becoming increasingly stringent as the intensification of industrial activities in the last 100 years has inevitably caused severe environmental pollution with dramatic consequences to the atmosphere, aquaculture, our water supply and agriculture. Advanced wastewater treatments are currently being developed for water conservation and recycling in both centralized and decentralized applications. In particular, advanced onsite decentralized treatment systems are particularly relevant for this application as they can provide high levels of water treatment and water quality protection comparable to centralized collection and treatment. Skyhaven Systems will be developing a novel chemical oxidation system to treat graywater and blackwater onboard naval vessels. The RIL approach will advance onboard treatment of wastewater by utilizing a flow-through tankless reactor which both generates a uniquely powerful oxidant and chemically reacts that oxidant with contaminated waste streams with no toxic byproducts.
