Department of Energy Awards Follow-On Contract to Skyhaven to Develop an Emergency Hydrogen Refueler for Fuel Cell Vehicles

August 27, 2018 – Skyhaven Systems was awarded a two-year follow-on contract from the Department of Energy to commercialize an emergency hydrogen refueler for fuel cell vehicles. Commercial sales of fuel cell vehicles are slowly increasing where a common concern of potential buyers is the sparse distribution network of hydrogen filling stations. This leads to range anxiety with the fear of running out of hydrogen fuel far removed from a refilling station. One strategy to alleviate the concerns of fuel cell vehicle operators in not having available hydrogen fuel is to place an emergency hydrogen refueler in the fuel cell vehicle trunk. This is tantamount to placing a can of gasoline in the trunk. A new hydrogen refueler has been developed by Skyhaven Systems that will meet this market need. The refueler contains a lithium hydride compound that when exposed to a water reservoir source releases hydrogen gas refilling the vehicle gas tank with enough fuel for the operator to drive 50 miles to a refueling station. This compact and lightweight product can be stored indefinitely in the vehicle trunk giving the vehicle driver assurance that they have a hydrogen source in case they run out of gas. Offering this emergency hydrogen refueler to vehicle owners will help alleviate range anxiety further helping to commercialize fuel cell vehicle sales and the continuing commissioning of hydrogen refueling stations.
